Listen & understand
Work with individuals, families, educators, and clinicians to understand daily needs, goals, and preferences.
ModelingStudent-led. Human-centered.
We turn engineering and 3D printing into personalized assistive devices—made for real people, at no cost.

01 / Our mission
Engineering Innovation.
Empowering Independence.
Modeling for Impact (MFI) is a student-founded initiative making assistive technology more accessible through innovative engineering and 3D printing.
We design, manufacture, and distribute customized devices at no cost to the people and communities who need them. Working with individuals and special education organizations, we create practical tools for communication, learning, and everyday independence.
02 / What we make
Every design begins with a person.
Explore the areas where we focus our work.
Communication, supported
A personalized overlay for an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device. Openings align with its on-screen buttons, providing a physical guide for making selections.
03 / How we work
Good engineering starts with understanding.
We develop solutions with the people who use them.
Work with individuals, families, educators, and clinicians to understand daily needs, goals, and preferences.
Translate those insights into 3D models, considering fit, texture, size, and visual contrast.
Gather feedback on prototypes and adjust the design around the individual’s experience.
Manufacture and distribute customized devices at no cost, with collaboration at the heart of the process.
04 / Built together
Founded by Alexios Rekoutis at Horace Mann School, MFI connects student engineering with the insight of educators, clinicians, and the people we design for.
Our founding project brought together community collaborators to help turn individual needs into thoughtful design.
Founding community collaborations
Collaborations documented in the 2025 founding grant application.

MFI’s customized assistive devices are provided at no cost to the individuals and communities who need them.
Yes. Start a conversation about the task or activity you want to make more accessible. We can discuss the need, relevant device details, and whether the project is a fit for MFI.
We collaborate with the person using the device and, where appropriate, their family, educators, and clinicians. Their feedback helps guide the design and prototyping process.
